Whether youre an amateur or a professional singer, no one gets spared from the attack of the nerves. Feeling nervous is a natural reaction from your body when the thought or feeling of fear and uncertainty steps in. Singing on stage before an audience is one of the most dreaded moments for students taking up voice lessons, and even for more experienced singers. An anxiety attack manifests itself in various bodily reactions, and some of them are as follows:

intense heartbeat and palpitation

muscle tension

dryness in the mouth and throat

mental block or memory loss

sweating

Here are some effective tips on how to get rid of those nerves while singing:

Practice! Practice! Practice! Nothing beats a well-rehearsed and well prepared for performance. Memorize. Know the melody and the lyrics of your song by heart. Voice teachers not only teach vocal techniques. Singing is a public activity. Thus, you will be guided on the overall execution and interpretation of the song from blockings, hand gestures, posture, to facial expressions. And yes, all these come from constant and well-guided practice sessions. Practicing gives you confidence and composure which trumps any of those attacks of anxiety.

Some Dos and Donts

Dont drink alcohol before your performance.

Do get a well-rested and good night sleep all the time to preserve your voice.

Do maintain a well-balanced diet.

Do physical exercises to condition your lungs. You need a good set of lungs to do breathing techniques that could boost your vocal power.

Do breathing exercises, especially when you are nervous. Proper breathing helps in reducing palpitation and keeping your voice control.

Do drink lots of warm water. Anxiety causes your mouth and throat to dry up. Hydrate to keep the moisture in your mouth and throat and prevent your voice from cracking up.

It is ok to make a mistake. Accept the fact that is possible for you to slip up. You are most likely to commit more mistakes when you are too uptight and conscious about it. Once it happens, just let it go. Do not let it ruin your entire performance. There is also the chance that nobody noticed it.

Think Positive. This is what youve always dreamed of. Visualize a successful performance. Do not allow negative thoughts to burst your bubble. If you feel good, you will feel more relaxed. Enjoy the moment!
